PROGRAM NOTE
Ararat is an exploration of spiritual transcendence, rooted in the profound symbolism of Armenia and its iconic Mount Ararat. For the composer, whose personal ties to Armenia run deep, the work delves into the eternal, mythical essence of the land—its spiritual gravitas—and the human aspiration to connect with ancient, absolute knowledge. Armenia, in this context, is not merely a geographic or cultural entity but a symbol of the potential for humanity to evolve toward a higher, peaceful existence. Mount Ararat, towering above Armenia, represents not only a sacred place in the nation’s history but a universal symbol of human transcendence; a mountain that, in its majesty and timelessness, evokes a connection to higher realms of understanding—those that lie beyond the physical, material world.
The composer draws upon this deep, almost mystic, resonance in Ararat, creating a musical journey that expresses both the beauty and the uncertainty inherent in humanity’s spiritual quest. The six movements of the piece explore two interweaving musical motifs: one ascending, representing aspiration, transcendence, and the yearning for spiritual fulfillment; the other descending, symbolizing the weight of material existence, conflict, and the unresolved tension of the human condition. The piece begins with an expansive Ouverture, which opens the listener to a vast landscape of possibility. This leads into the Misterioso, a movement that explores introspection and the mysterious depths of spiritual longing. The Recitativo deepens this emotional journey, invoking the internal struggle between the earthly and the transcendent. The Tempo di Mezzo and Gavotta introduce contrasting moments of tension and fragile joy, before the final Reprise closes the piece in unresolved openness—mirroring the uncertainty that defines humanity’s path toward spiritual progress.
While Ararat does not directly engage with the political realities of contemporary Armenia, it resonates deeply with the spirit of resistance, hope, and renewal that defines the nation’s history. The piece acknowledges that the path to spiritual awakening is fraught with challenges and uncertainty, yet persuasively suggests that such a journey is possible, even in the face of the world’s turbulence and chaos. In this sense, Ararat is not only a tribute to the enduring spirit of a people but a universal call to humanity’s potential for transformation.
