PROGRAM NOTE
Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 3 in A minor, Op. 28 (1917) is a stunning one-movement work that masterfully blends classical sonata-form procedures with the expressionistic spirit of early 20th-century music. It stands as a memorable and exemplary piece; indeed, I find its expressive potential almost limitless and endeavored to orchestrate it using the kind of orchestral forces Prokofiev himself might have called for in 1918.
