Programme note:
Sergei Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 3 in A minor, Op. 28 (1917), is a concentrated one-movement work that combines classical sonata-form procedures with the expressionist energy of the composer’s early style. Casaccia’s orchestration approaches the sonata as an implicit orchestral score, distributing its sharply contrasted registers, textures and rhythmic strata across forces broadly consonant with Prokofiev’s orchestral practice around 1918. The arrangement seeks not to enlarge the piano writing decoratively, but to clarify the latent instrumental functions already embedded in it.
